A Bright Start to the New Year: Lawrence Welcomes 2026 with Safer, Better-Lit Streets

As the Village of Lawrence rings in the New Year, residents are already seeing one of the community’s most impactful improvements come to light. The Village is proud to announce that its comprehensive street lighting upgrade is complete, marking a bright and safer start to the year ahead.
Under Mayor Samuel Nahmias’ forward-thinking vision, unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees, and efficiently executed by Village Administrator Gerry Castro in partnership with the Department of Public Works, Lawrence has replaced 800 carriage-style fixtures with modern LED lighting. Each new fixture delivers more than 5,000 lumens with no lens refraction, allowing brighter, more focused illumination on roadways and sidewalks. The project, with an estimated cost of $500 per fixture including labor, was financed largely through a Nassau County grant, facilitated by Presiding Officer Howard Kopel.
The impact is already noticeable. Residents report significantly improved nighttime visibility, particularly following the end of Daylight Saving Time and the shorter winter days. These upgrades are expected to enhance public safety, deter crime, and improve conditions for both drivers and pedestrians throughout the Village.
Additional lighting improvements along Route 878 near the Atlantic Beach Bridge—also initiated by Mayor Nahmias and made possible largely through a grant facilitated by State Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick—have further strengthened traffic safety in that critical corridor.
“As we begin a new year, this investment reflects our commitment to looking ahead and protecting our community,” said Mayor Samuel Nahmias. “Better lighting helps reduce crime, improves visibility, and makes Lawrence safer for everyone after dark. I thank County Executive Bruce Blakeman for Nassau County’s partnership in helping make this project possible.”
With brighter streets and a continued focus on smart infrastructure, the Village of Lawrence looks forward to a safe, strong, and successful New Year for all residents.
