DANGEROUS HEAT WAVE COMING THIS WEEK — Five Towns Residents Take Note
A serious and potentially dangerous heat wave is building across the entire Tri-State area heading into the July 4th holiday weekend. Temperatures are expected to climb sharply through the week with heat index values making it feel significantly hotter than the thermometer reads. The most intense heat is forecast for Thursday and Friday, just before the holiday. Five Towns residents — especially seniors, young children, and those without air conditioning — should take precautions: stay indoors during peak hours (11 AM–4 PM), stay hydrated, check on elderly neighbors, and never leave children or pets in parked cars. Nassau County cooling centers are available — call 311 for locations near you. Read more here
LIRR STRIKE OVER — New Contract Signed, Nearly 15% Wage Increase for Workers
Great news for Five Towns commuters: the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has approved new four-year contracts with all Long Island Rail Road unions, officially ending the three-day strike that stranded roughly 300,000 daily commuters in May. The new contracts provide workers with nearly 15 percent in wage increases across the four-year term — the deal Gov. Hochul announced on social media with service resuming the following Tuesday at noon. For Five Towns residents who ride the Far Rockaway Branch daily, full normal service has been restored. Check mta.info for any schedule updates heading into the July 4th holiday weekend. Source: liherald.com

Young Israel of Woodmere (YIW) continues to evaluate its potential acquisition of the historic Woodmere Club property — and the community is watching closely. No final decision has been made yet, but the shul has retained counsel and is actively working through the process. The 110-acre property at the border of Woodmere, Lawrence, and Woodsburgh has been closed for years and remains one of the most hotly debated pieces of real estate in the Five Towns. Stay tuned — this one could reshape our community for generations. Read more here

IMPORTANT: NYS Pool Safety Rules Apply to Inflatable & Temporary Pools Too
With summer in full swing and backyard pools going up across the Five Towns, New York State is reminding homeowners that safety regulations apply to temporary and inflatable pools as well — not just permanent in-ground setups. Any pool capable of holding more than 24 inches of water is subject to state fencing and safety requirements. That includes large quick-set pools and seasonal pop-up setups. The rules require a barrier or fence at least 4 feet high surrounding any pool meeting that threshold. Violations can result in fines — but more importantly, proper fencing saves lives. With small children in our community, this is a rule worth knowing. Read more here

20,000+ NYC STUDENTS GETTING ANTI-HATE TRAINING — A Program Worth Knowing About
A swastika was discovered etched into a window at the Inwood train station last week, specifically in the portion of the station located within the Village of Lawrence. Lawrence Mayor Samuel Nahmias condemned the act in the strongest terms, calling it "especially despicable" and confirming that Nassau County Police and MTA authorities are jointly investigating the incident. The village recently announced plans to install approximately 160 surveillance cameras throughout the community — directly connected to the Nassau police command center — to help track down and deter perpetrators of exactly this kind of hateful act.
